CLASS DESCRIPTION:
This year, National Poetry Month overlaps with the 9th month of the Islamic lunar year, which is the month of Ramadan! Around the world, believers observe this as a time of fasting and breaking the fast, constraint and nourishment, renewed focus and celebration. In this generative workshop, we will create new work in response to prompts and discuss a selection of readings that have enriched the instructors own writing practice, including poems by Solmaz Sharif, Franny Choi, and Aracelis Girmay. Come ready to write in supportive, celebratory community!
About the Instructor: Lena Khalaf Tuffaha is a poet, essayist, and translator. Her first book, Water & Salt (Red Hen Press) won the 2018 Washington State Book Award for Poetry. Her first chapbook, Arab in Newsland, won the 2016 Two Sylvias Press Prize. Her chapbook, Letters from the Interior, (Diode 2019), is a finalist for the 2020 Jean Pedrick Chapbook Prize.
